Winter:
Winter tire stay flexible in temperatures below 7 degrees to provide
the necessary traction for cold-weather driving conditions. They reduce
braking distance on cold, wet, ice and snow-covered roads in comparison
to all-season tires. The traction provided by winter tires enhances the
performance of anti-lock braking system (ABS); wheel stability assist
(VSA), traction control and all-wheel drive in winter conditions.
Vehicles with winter tires in cold weather conditions have a 40% less
chance of being involved in a collision, versus one with all-season
tires.
All-Season: All season tires are designed
to provide traction and durability in a wide variety of seasonal road
conditions. However, they cannot provide the same levels of traction in
winter conditions as a proper winter tire. Best suited for temperatures
above 7 degrees.
Extending the life of your tires:
Up to
70% of vehicles on the road has at least one under-inflated tire.
Therefore, being aware as well as maintaining tire pressure can help
extend tire life and reduce fuel over- consumption. Every time you check
your tires, you should also examine them for damage, foreign objects
and excessive wear.
Wheel Alignment:
Misaligned wheels
can cause uneven and rapid wear to your tires. It is normal for wheel
alignment to change through the life of the vehicle, as wear accumulates
and especially if the vehicle is driven on rough roads. If accelerated
or abnormal tire damage is discovered during vehicle maintenance, or
your Honda has developed symptoms such as pulling to one side or that
the steering wheel is not center when driving straight, the wheel
alignment should be check and corrected if need be.
Wheel Balancing:
Proper
wheel balance helps prevent unnecessary wear to the tires, steering,
and suspension components. Wheel balance typically changes as tires wear
down, and it should be check periodically especially if you have
noticed any speed-related vibrations while driving.
Wheel alignment should always be done when replacing tires and when a tire has been removed from a wheel for any reason.
How can your tires affect your fuel economy?
Anything
that increases a tire's rolling resistance or friction with the road
surface will increase the amount of work required of the engine, and
therefore affects the amount of fuel being burned.
Tire Pressure:
Under-inflammation
increases a tire's rolling resistance. Therefore, leading to increased
level of fuel consumption. Do not wait for your tires to "look" low, or
the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warns you that they are
low.Tires that are 56kPa (8 PSI) low can increase fuel consumption by
4%.
Wheel Alignment:
Wheel misalignment increases the
resistance of the tires to roll in the direction or vehicle movement,
which requires extra engine power to overcome and more fuel to be
consumed. The increased "drag" caused could increase fuel consumption by
up to 25%.
Tire Tread Depth:
Automobile and light truck
tires that are manufactured for sale in North America have wear
indicators ("wear bars") molded into the tire tread at 2/32" depth.
Having your tires at 2/32" is the minimum legal tread depth permitted on
public roads. When a tire's tread is worn further than the indicators,
the tires is considered illegal for further use and must be replaced.
Some-all
season tires have a second wear indicator at 4/32" tread depth. When
worn to this depth, tires may no longer be suitable for use in snow and
may experience hydroplaning in severe wet conditions.
Winter tires may have a second wear indicator at 6/32" that indicates when the tire may no longer be suitable for use in snow.
Tire Safety: Tire Maintenance and Safety
Replacement Purchase Sale:
Proper
tire care and safety is simple and easy. The Rubber Manufacturers
Association (RMA) recommends taking five minutes every month and before
every long trip to check your tires (including the spare).
Just remember to be Tire Smart and to play your Part.Using the simple acronym of PART: (Pressure, Alignment, Rotation, Tread).
Pressure:
Under inflation results in unnecessary tire stress, irregular wear,
loss of control and accidents. A tire can lose up to half of its air
pressure and not appear to be flat!
Alignment: A
bad jolt from hitting a curb or pothole can throw your front end out of
alignment and damage your tires. Have a tire dealer check the alignment
periodically to ensure that your car is aligned correctly.
Rotation:
Rotating your tires on a regular basis will help you achieve a more
uniform wear. A guideline is usually approximately every 9600 KM's.
Tread:
Advanced and unusual wear can reduce the ability of tread to grip the
road in adverse conditions. Visually check them for uneven wear, looking
for high and low areas or unusually smooth areas. Check for signs of
damage.
Pacific Honda's how to Check Tire Air Pressure:
- Refer to you vehicles owners' manual for the proper level of inflation; it may also be posted on the door.
- When you check the air pressure, make sure the tires are cool- meaning they are not hot from driving even a kilometer.
- Remove the cap from the tire valve, firmly press a tire gauge onto the valve and note the reading.
- Add air to achieve recommended air pressure

Why Do I need to check my alignment?
- If
your car's suspension system if out of alignment, your tires will wear
unevenly and you may experience handling problems. Potholes and rough
roads can contribute to wear.
- Front-wheel drive vehicles, and those with independent rear suspension, require alignment of all four wheels.
- Have
a Pacific Honda Service Department advisor check your alignment
periodically as specified by your vehicles owners' manual or if handling
problems develop, such as "pulling" or vibration.
- Also have your tire balance checked periodically. An unbalanced tire and wheel assembly may result in irregular wear.
Pacific Honda's HOW TO: check tire tread
When the tread is worn down to 2/32 of an inch, (2.5mm), tires MUST be replaced.
A penny is a reliable tool to check tire tread.
- 1.
Take a penny and put the Queen's head into one of the grooves of the
tire tread. If part of her head is covered by the tread, you are driving
with the legal amount.
- 2. If you CAN'T see all of the Queen's head, it's time to replace the tire.
Remember, if properly cared for, tires can last a long time- usually from 64,000 to 128,000 KMS.
